Formation mechanism of adatom islands on fcc (111) substrates

چکیده
We explore the effects of various basic atomic processes on the island shapes of diffusion-limited-aggregate growth on a triangular lattice using kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. Edge diffusion and bond-reducing relaxation of double-coordinated adatoms, as well as single-coordinated adatoms, are proved to be essential to the island shape transition from fractal to irregularly compact and from irregularly compact to hexagonal islands, respectively. Shape transitions of adatom islands on fcc (111) substrates can be understood naturally by this model.

Stacking-fault nucleation on Ir(111).
Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy experiments reveal that in Ir(111) homoepitaxy islands nucleate and grow both in the regular fcc stacking and in the faulted hcp stacking. Analysis of this effect in dependence on deposition temperature leads to an atomistic model of stacking-fault formation: The large, metastable stacking-fault islands grow by sufficiently fast addition of ada...
متن کاملLink between adatom resonances and the Cu(111) Shockley surface state.
Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at 7 K was used to assemble and characterize native adatom islands of successive size on the Cu(111) surface. Starting from the single adatom we observe the formation of a series of quantum states which merge into the well known two-dimensional Shockley surface state in the limit of large islands. Our experiments reveal a natural ph...
متن کاملTheory of adsorption and surfactant effect of Sb on Ag(111).
We present first-principles studies of the adsorption of Sb and Ag on clean and Sb-covered Ag (111). For Sb, the substitutional adsorption site is found to be greatly favored with respect to on-surface fcc sites and to subsurface sites, so that a segregating surface alloy layer is formed. Adsorbed silver adatoms are more strongly bound on clean Ag(111) than on Sb-covered Ag. We propose that the...
متن کاملSTM-induced formation of Ag islands on Ag(111)
The formation of triangular-shaped adatom islands and vacancy islands on Ag(111) at room temperature is observed in a local growth experiment. The tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) vibrating normal to the surface leads to a local modification. Atoms are removed from flat terraces and renucleate as adatom islands. Simultaneously with the modification process the surface is imaged with...
متن کاملAb initio calculations of energies and self-diffusion on flat and stepped surfaces of Al and their implications on crystal growth.
Using density-functional theory we investigate several properties of Al (111), Al (100), Al (110), and stepped Al (111) surfaces. We report results of formation energies of surfaces, steps, adatoms, and vacancies. For the adsorption and diffusion of Al on flat regions of Al (111) surfaces we find the hcp site energetically slightly preferred over the fcc site. The energy barrier for self-diffus...
